Hello,

I am new to the board and am looking forward to sharing with everyone. I am currently in school to get my PSW certificate, specializing in palliative care. I'm really glad I found this board, what a great place for support!

Hi Lulubird,

welcome to the forum!
your career choice is one of the heart - so glad to know you are interested in palliative care
its a sector of  care that needs more attention and focus

i retired from ltc work in 2009 - taking on the support and care of a special needs family member
glad to welcome you to the Virtual hospice community;)

I began working as a nurses aid back in the mid 1960's and can tell you PSW training has improved the level of personal care for all clients.
still hoping to see more standards and skills added ;)
best wishes
NatR

Hi Lulubird

I am a hospice volunteer.  Other than my family, it is the most rewarding thing in my life.

There are jobs, careers and vocations; however, I believe that to work in palliative care is to answer a "calling".  Some people deny this, others have not yet discovered this and yet others, like me, know and treasure this truth.  I feel honoured to have been chosen to serve others at this most poignant time of their lives.

Regardless of anything else that goes on in palliative care, the underlying current that flows through it  all, is one of soft, sweet spirituality – with or without formalized religion.  It is palpable.  If you open your heart, you will feel it.  If you accept this phenomena as your guide, it will sustain and protect you.

I work with many PSWs.  I love these precious “EarthAngels”.  Welcome and I wish you a wondrous future.

-eKim
