Talking to children about the death of a parent
10 juil. 2012, 21 h 28

Since folks are always on the lookout for new resources,  I read about news of a new book and thought it might be useful to community members.

Recently, the American Cancer Society published a new book that explores loss and healing from a child’s perspective. “And Still They Bloom: A Family’s Journey of Loss and Healing” is a fictional story of Ben and Emily, ages seven and ten, and their emotional struggle after the loss of their mother to cancer.

In this story, the children deal with the death of their mother in different ways, but both have trouble understanding why cancer happens and why some people die and some don’t. The beautifully illustrated book follows the children and their father as they cope and carry on their mother’s memory through work in the family garden. Over time, the two children learn to adjust and begin to feel open to moments of joy.

In Canada, it looks like the book is available for purchase online at:

Thank you GirlWithTheBlackBeret for sharing the link and the synopsis of this wonderful book intended for grieving children and families. The author's Mom died when she was only nine years old, so her perspective will carry with it authenticity.

I have distributed it as well via Twitter. It's especially painful to think of youngsters losing their parents to death. It is not easy even as adults to cope with the loss of a parent, as you and I both know.

With affection - hugs - xo

I love it when community members share useful resources. It pains us when our children suffer. We work so very hard at protecting them that when they have to face the loss of a loved one, we are often at a loss as to how to help them, especially because we are usually grieving too.

Here are a few other resources that we shared in a recent issue of our eNews “Losing a Parent”:
    • Nanaimo Hospice Society has a great online collection of grief resources for children and teens. They also developed a website specifically for teens dealing with death called teensanddeath.ca

Of course, we have several threads on the Discussion Forums too. For example:
What resources helped you when your child was grieving? Did you seek help from your local hospice?
